‘ONE OFF THE ROAD’ AS ABP LOWESTOFT HANDLES BREWERY EQUIPMENT

Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Lowestoft has played an important part in quenching East Anglia’s thirst – while also relieving road pollution – by handling brewery-plant equipment for local company Adnams.

The nine stainless-steel brewery tanks – worth around £1.5 million in total – were manufactured in Germany and then shipped to the Port of Lowestoft onboard RMS Scanlark, for onward delivery to Adnams’ Sole Bay Brewery, located in Southwold, Suffolk.

Southwold has brewed beer since 1345, with Adnams’ two founding brothers – George and Ernst Adnams – opening their brewery in 1872. Adnams currently brews nine distinctive brands of beer, which are available in the company’s 83 pubs located throughout East Anglia.

Andy Wood, Managing Director, Adnams, said:

“Adnams takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and so wanted to transport its new brewery tanks as far as possible by sea, alleviating road congestion and reducing carbon emissions in the process. By utilising ABP’s Port of Lowestoft, we were able to reduce the number of miles the shipment travelled by road to just 12 – a fantastic achievement, considering the tanks needed to travel over 370 miles to get here.”

Alastair MacFarlane, Port Manager, ABP East Anglia, said:

“As an occasional drinker of Adnams’ beer, I am especially glad that the Port of Lowestoft has facilitated this shipment for Adnams’ Sole Bay Brewery. The port was ideally situated to handle this shipment, which also highlights its ability to handle any conceivable type of cargo.”
