ABP CONNECT REAPS TOP HONOURS IN NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AWARDS

ABP Connect, Associated British Ports’ (ABP) value-added services division, has claimed a top gong at the tenth Green Apple Environment Awards, scooping the National Silver Award in the Automotive Industry category.

Staged this year at the Houses of Parliament and hosted by Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt MP, the prestigious Green Apple Environmental Awards recognises and rewards councils, companies, communities and countries that have excelled in their efforts to protect and enhance the environment; it is now regarded as one of the top environmental award schemes in the UK.

ABP Connect received the Automotive Industry award for their ‘exceptional environmental best-practice management systems that are in place at their automotive-processing facilities for import/export vehicles’ at ABP’s Port of Southampton. As one of the category winners, ABP Connect has also been automatically short-listed for entry into the European Environment Award.

ABP Connect’s Managing Director Stephen Burgess and Commercial Manager Chris Harris collected the award from lifestyle writer Carol Caplin. Roger Wolens, national organiser of the awards scheme, congratulated ABP Connect and the other winners. He said:

“The number of entries has almost doubled this year, so the winners are to be congratulated more than ever.

“ABP Connect’s winning submission will now be published, with a selection of others, in The Green Book, the international work of reference on environmental best practice that enables many thousands of others around the world to learn and benefit from the achievements of our winners.

“Our objective is not only to recognise and publicise various environmental endeavours, but also to help others to follow those examples. Anyone can visit the greenorganisation.info website to learn from the environmental experiences of previous winners.”

Stephen Burgess welcomed the latest environmental accolade to be bestowed upon ABP Connect.

“I’m proud of the environmental achievements ABP Connect has made. Richard Bull, our Environment Manager, was key to our securing ISO 14001 [a quality standard award for excellent environmental practice] in May of this year and has been the driving force behind winning this latest award. Receiving both awards demonstrates our absolute commitment to meeting our environmental responsibilities. I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has helped to develop and maintain this high standard in environmental performance.”
